Dear Colleagues and Friends,

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to attend the 18th Congress of the International Society for Human and Animal Mycology 2012 (ISHAM 2012) to be held in Berlin, Germany, from June 11-15, 2012.

The 17th Congress of the International Society for Human and Animal Mycology, organized in May 2009 by Hideoki Ogawa and his colleagues from the Japanese Society for Medical Mycology in Tokyo, Japan, was very successful. Approximately 1000 participants enjoyed this outstanding meeting. Those of you who have had the opportunity to attend previous ISHAM meetings will agree that this congress is the most important international event in the field of experimental and medical mycology.

It is our privilege to organize ISHAM 2012 in Berlin, the vibrant capital of Germany and one of the world’s fastest changing megacities. A fascinating process of innovation and a unique scientific, cultural and political tradition are its hallmarks. Berlin is the place where Rudolf Virchow, Robert Koch and many other prominent medical scientists spent most of their professional lives. Rudolf Virchow is said to have coined the term “mycoses,” which later became the name of the official journal of the “Deutschsprachige Mykologische Gesellschaft”.

The Charité, founded in 1710, is now Europe’s largest university medical school, and the Robert Koch Institute, located next to Charité Campus Virchow-Klinikum, houses one of the leading institutes of medical mycology in Germany. The institute was named after its first director, Robert Koch. When he died in 1910, a mausoleum was built within the walls of the institute to hold his funeral urn.

Apart from places redolent of medical history, you will find unique scenery with a diversity of architectural and cultural attractions. So please take time to enjoy this place!

We are preparing an ambitious congress program spanning all the hot topics in medical and clinical mycology, and we would be delighted to welcome all of you to our city.
